Grido XI

Two clubs, one player. A daily football grid, with live 1v1 when one grid is not enough.

An empty Daily Grid on Easy with three clubs down the side and a club, an era and the goalkeeper position across the top, nine guesses left.

Overview

Grido XI is a football trivia game built on one question. Every row is a club, every column is a club, a country, a position or an era, and each cell asks for a real footballer who fits both. A new Daily Grid every day in four difficulties, the same for everyone, plus live matches, a card collection and tables to climb.

The problem

Football knowledge is deep. Most quizzes only skim it.

Multiple choice rewards recognition, not recall. The fun part of football trivia is the name that takes ten seconds to surface, and the argument about whether it counts.

The grid format already answers that, but the games built on it tend to stop at the puzzle. No opponent, nothing to keep, and data that rejects answers you know are right.

Our approach

One question, asked nine ways. Then asked against the clock, and against a person.

The whole game grows out of a single mechanic. The Daily Grid asks it nine times, Live 1v1 turns it into three in a row, and the other modes change the pressure, not the rules.

Underneath is a career dataset built from Wikidata and Wikipedia for 99 clubs in eight countries. A player counts for a club after one official first-team appearance, loans included, and a rejected answer can be flagged in one tap.

Product experience

A walk through Grido XI.

  1. 01 — Daily

One grid a day, the same for everyone.

Rows are clubs. Columns are clubs, countries, positions or eras. Nine guesses, each one final, in four difficulties. It plays offline, and rarer answers score more.

The Daily Grid on Easy with nine empty cells, zero points, nine guesses left and a six day streak.

  2. 02 — Cards

Every right answer becomes a card.

The first time you name a player, their card is yours. Common, Rare and Legend cards are earned by playing and never sold. The cards are typographic, the name and the career, with no photos.

A face-down card with a question mark, waiting to be tapped open after a correct answer.

  3. 03 — Live

Three in a row, against a real opponent.

Take turns claiming cells in a rated match, or share a six-character code and play a friend in a private room. When no human is around a practice bot steps in, labelled as one.

The Live 1v1 versus screen with both players’ ratings and levels and a countdown at three.

  4. 04 — Collection

Squads to complete, club by club.

Cards fill club squads, and the collection shows which one you are closest to finishing. Clubs appear as abstract kits in their own colours, with no crests.

The Collection tab listing clubs by country, each with a kit in the club’s colours and a count of cards collected.

  5. 05 — Tables

A table for today, one for the month, one for your club.

Daily points, a monthly table and rating each have a podium. Pick a club and push it up the club table, which ranks by average points so a big club gets no head start.

The Leaderboard on the This month tab, showing 1v1 rating, with a three-place podium, the players below it and your own rank with a share button.

Features

What is inside.

  • Daily Grid

One puzzle for everyone, in Easy, Normal, Hard or Legend, with a streak to protect.

  • Live 1v1 and private rooms

Rated matches with rematches, and friendly rooms that never touch your rating.

  • 3-2-1-!

Both players make a secret pick, both are revealed on the count, and the first to name a player who fits both takes the round. First to three wins.

  • Career Path

A career is revealed club by club. Name the player early for more points.

  • Time Attack and Survival

Sixty seconds for as many cells as you can, or a run that ends on the first wrong answer.

  • Unlimited and challenges

As many practice grids as you like, and a code that sends a friend your exact grid.

  • Past days

The last seven Daily Grids stay open for everyone. Pro opens the whole archive.

  • Daily quests

Three a day, the same for everyone, with a bonus chest for finishing all three.

  • Levels, badges and squads

Levels to climb, badges to earn and signature squads to complete.

  • Result cards

A spoiler-free result card to share after every grid.

  • This should count

Think an answer should have counted? Flag it in one tap and the data gets fixed.

  • No sign-up needed

Play as a guest with a generated nickname. Continue with Apple or Google to carry progress to another phone, and export or delete your data from Settings at any time.

Behind the build

A football game with no photos and no crests sounds like a constraint. It became the look.

Player cards are typographic. A name, a nationality, a position and the years, inside a frame that tells you how rare the card is. Clubs are abstract kits in their real colours with a three-letter code. Nothing imitates a badge, so nothing depends on a licence.

The data got the same care as the interface. Careers come from Wikidata and Wikipedia, clubs are resolved from a hand-checked list, and a player counts only after an official first-team appearance. When someone flags an answer that should have counted, the fix goes into the dataset, not into an exception.

Fairness is enforced where it cannot be argued with. Answers in live matches and points for the daily grid are checked on the server, practice bots never appear in a rated result or a private room, and nothing you can buy changes today’s grid.

Technology

How it is built.

SwiftUI
The whole interface, on the Observation framework, from iOS 17.
SQLite
The career dataset ships inside the app, so the Daily Grid plays offline.
Data pipeline
Python scripts build the dataset from Wikidata and Wikipedia career tables, with hand-checked club lists.
Supabase
Postgres with row-level security and Realtime for live matches, scores and profiles.
Server-side scoring
Answers and daily points are checked in database functions. The app cannot write a score.
Game Center
Leaderboards and achievements alongside the in-game tables.
String Catalogs
Every string in seven languages, switchable inside the app.
RevenueCat
The Pro subscription on top of StoreKit 2.
Firebase
Crash reports, analytics and remote configuration.

Milestones

  1. The game gets its name, seven languages and a new icon.

  2. Work starts with a data proof. Can public career data fill a grid?
